Antiviral treatment can reduce the impact of the virus, relieve the acute pain of shingles and heal the rash more quickly. To be effective, however, the treatment must start no later than 72 hours after the rash first appeared.
Painkillers can be used to relieve the pain of shingles.
To prevent the rash becoming infected, it is advisable to try to keep the skin clean. It is also advisable to avoid scratching and bursting the blisters.
